The day finally arrived. After several months of preparing the undergarage, mounting baseboards, contructing portable loop structures, buying track and planning how to use it, I was ready to start track laying.
I invited two of my staunch supporters, Peter and Tom, to help.
Peter (our middle son) arrived dressed in what his mother considers is appropriate attire for a railway nerd (anorak, camera, flask and sandwiches)

First Peter and Tom helped manoeuvre the out-and-back loop to its correct position. There was much tutting and sucking of teeth as the spirit level was used multiple times to ensure the track bed was as level as possible.

Eventually after several adjustments it was pronounced to be in the correct position:

(You should remember this is a ‘temporary’ structure that will move around the garden as the outside track gets extended)
Although a track plan for the loop had been designed using sophisticated software, implementation was somewhat different as we wrestled with the actual space available (and discovered an error in the size of the loop as coded in the software).
Eventually we placed the track where we wanted it:

Tom was actually a lot happier with our work than he appears in this photo 🙂
The outdoor track was screwed in place, and then attention moved to inside.

Time did not permit finalisation of the indoor track. But there was time for a couple of test drives!!
Thanks to Tom and Peter for their invaluable help.

Looking forward to the future building and operations…
