Time flies….

Two weeks since my last blog post, and we have already reached half-term, commonly known here as mid-term. It’s a very short break – as teachers we get a long weekend, with no teaching on the Friday and Monday.

Lesley and I took the opportunity to go off with friends to Lake Elementaita. We stayed at a lodge on the lake side, with beautiful views of the flamingos.

A few of us took a horse ride along the lake side:

This was the view from our ‘tent’ (which was really a building, except the outer surfaces were canvas, possibly because they are not allowed to erect permanent buildings on the nature conservancy).

Across the lawn from the bar was a watering hole, where waterbuck, buffalo and zebras would come to drink in the evening.

The previous weekend the whole school went over the road to the local African church. It was a lively service (in English) with plenty of singing and dancing. Here is a very brief extract.

The rest of the time has been normal duties : teaching (including extra classes for two students who are preparing for Maths International GCSE), Titchie Variety Night (where Adam organised various games for a dozen of the primary school children), Dorm cover, lunch duty, marking tests, etc, etc.

  1. How lovely to see all those flamingos! Tom, Vicdan and I saw 2 ballerinas dressed as flamingos in a ballet show in Mainz last night – they flew through the air too! Do they smell I wonder? The real ones I mean…… I’ve seen on documentaries that they like to eat flies that hover above the water – is that true? I honestly thought they ate shrimp and that’s why there were pink! Mind you – I once saw what I thought was an extraordinary blue lobster whilst diving off the coast of Exeter and it was only then that my diving instructor informed me that they were all blue and only turned pink after being boiled ! Strange what info one holds to be true until someone educates you eh? I love zebras – how marvellous to see them so close by. Lucky you. Nice to read about your updates. Good luck in all that you do!
