Sounders, dazzles and obstinacies

Lesley has returned to Germany to meet our new grandson, Miles, and provide some support for his parents, Tim and Elli. She will also spend some time in the UK visiting Alice, Chris and Everlee. I will return to Europe for the Christmas holidays, and then we will both come back to RVA at the end of December.

Since we will be apart for several weeks, we took the opportunity to go away together for a couple of days before Lesley left. We were invited by colleagues to join a trip to Amboseli, a game reserve south-west of Nairobi.

We were very fortunate to see many beautiful animals, including a sounder of warthogs, a dazzle of zebras and an obstinacy of buffalos (not sure I believe all these collective nouns….).

We also saw lions mating, playing and (here) feeding.

I think the highlight was probably a hippopotamus that was feeding by the side of the road, only a few meters away (the wind blowing on the microphone is very loud, but you can catch the sound of chomping from time to time)

We were there two nights, which gave us a chance to see sunrise….

and sunset …

It was a wonderful experience.

  3. I don’t need to listen to a hippo chomping – your brother is here, and making quite enough noise slurping the marrowbone-enriched gravy in my slow-cooked Shin of Beef – 4 hours in a cast iron casserole at 150c. No leftovers for tomorrow. But he disappointed me, going easy on the Cornish Clotted Cream on his Butter Scone, (with raspberry jam. of course).

Thank you for the great photos and congratulations on the birth of Miles!
When we went to South Africa I loved the giraffes most of all. We saw numerous young ones (calves?).
