Platforms

A model railway isn’t just about the track and the trains, it also includes the surrounding infrastructure, and everything that sets the scene.

So I decided one of the things I needed to add such atmosphere would be a platform at the indoor station.

I started by taking some of my 18mm thick OSB offcuts and cutting them to a 9cm width, and some of the 12mm plywood I am using as baseboards, cut to 10cm width.

Some judicious use of wood glue and I carefully glued the OSB to the underneath of the plywood, giving a small overhang on both sides.

The combined height of 30mm perfectly matched the steps down from the carriages, although passengers would still be advised to “Mind the gap”.

The next step was to inscribe what is supposed to look like paving slabs along the edge of the platform.

Just about visible.

Next will be to paint the paving stones white (so that the passengers know where the edge of the platform is, and the rest of the surface grey (to mimic tarmac or concrete). I have bought the paint, but didn’t have time yet to use it.

I don’t need to worry about weatherproofing this platform, since it will be located inside.

Here you can see it in place (even though not yet painted) with a railway official ensuring that everything is in good order.
