Keep on keeping on

Just a quick post today – we are firmly into Term 2 now, with the mid-term break coming up in a couple of weeks, but still plenty going on.

Apart from classes, and regular weekly commitments of dorm cover and library duty, a couple of weeks ago I also ran another Wizard tournament with 20 students taking part:

The winners got prizes kindly donated by Amigo, the publisher of Wizard:

Then last Friday, we again hosted our caring community group of ten 12th grade boys last Friday evening. We organized a Family Fortunes style quiz (100 people are asked a question, and you have to guess the most popular answers). One question was ‘What can a snake swallow whole?” The most popular answer (mouse/rat) had already been given. One lad spent ages thinking about his answer, apparently calculating things in his head. He gave the answer ‘crocodile’, which elicited much laughter from his friends, until they found it was the third most popular answer, when everyone was struck down with hilarity. Some of them were literally rolling on the floor with laughter. We all had a great time.

Last night I helped Lesley organise a tournament night for the 4th-6th grade children. It was quite a small group, and we played bingo, set up dominoes in patterns to be knocked over, and played Heckmeck.

Tomorrow I am giving a talk about space/planets to the 5th grade pupils, and next next weekend is the LEGO robotics competition in Nairobi. At the insistence of the lead coach, last weekend we redesigned our robot to remove the (rather unreliable) gearbox. I was doubtful about this approach, but the team redesigned all the missions using the simpler robot during the week, and all the missions were being successfully run yesterday. Still some work to be done on the presentations which accompany the robot run, but, as they say in show business, ‘it will be alright on the night’.

‘Alright’ is grammatically undesirable – ‘All right’ should be the spelling employed by True Brits serving overseas.
