We have finished our face-to-face New Staff Orientation, getting to understand the layout and operation of the school. In parallel I have been working through a self-paced training course for the on-line Learning Management System they use.

Last week it was a blank canvas, with just a couple of training courses for me to work through, and a sandbox (a practice area) for me to play in.

Then yesterday when I logged on …. I found five courses for me to teach!

And what is more, each course had students allocated – REAL STUDENTS – with names and photographs – who I will have to start teaching in two weeks time. This is getting serious.

Kenyan Elections

Yesterday was also the announcement of the results of the Kenyan presidential election. The winner was William Ruto, and it was a somewhat unexpected result. Several of the officials in charge of tallying the votes were unable to support the declaration, stating the final phase of the process was “opaque”.

His rival, Raila Odinga, who is attempting for the fifth time to become president (never having succeeded before), has responded by claiming that the election was illegal and unconstitutional.

In the meantime, people in Kijabe have generally been celebrating. The Rift Valley area is a stronghold for Ruto.

The hope is that any challenge to the election result will be fought out in the courts, and not on the streets, but we are still being advised to keep a low profile until things are clearer.
