Settling in

We are about one week into our orientation training here in Nairobi

The training takes place at CORAT Africa [the Christian Organizations Research and Advisory Trust of Africa], a Christian hotel and conference centre in the outskirts of Nairobi.

There are about 35 people on the training course, comprising a wide variety of nationalities, including Swiss, British, German, Malagasy, Taiwanese, Brazilian, Canadian and American.

About one fifth of the group will be going to the Rift Valley Academy, either as teachers or dorm parents, so Lesley and I are able to get to know some of our future colleagues.

The rest will be going on to a wide variety of situations in various African countries. Some are embedded within local communities, learning the local language, and encouraging local Christians in the setting up or development of local churches. Others are setting up local businesses and inviting people to learn about Christ through friendship and local contact.

In all cases, there is a big emphasis on respect for the local culture, and on equipping and empowering the local African Christians and churches.

On Saturday morning we hiked up the local Ngong hills, and caught a glimpse of the Rift Valley through the clouds.

In the afternoon, we walked to the local shopping centre, to buy Kenyan sim cards. We were glad our walking companions were on the other side of the road.

After training finishes, there is a chance to relax in the gardens of the centre. We are very blessed.

Hey Lesley and Adam, lovely to read from you. You made me jealous when you wrote you were walking up the Ngong Hill. This must be a dream for everybody who is dreaming of a “Farm in Africa, at the foot of the Ngong Hill”….

But Adam, do you already not remember anymore our walks around lunchtime? They were also suspicious creatures passing our path. They were on bikes and were just released from school, frightening!

Have you met the pupils yet?

    1. No pupils yet (apart from one or two who are children of people also being trained) We are undergoing general training in Nairobi until the beginning of August. Then we transfer to the school and have 2-3 weeks there to settle in before the pupils arrive for the new school year.
